Android Catching Up to iOS in Race for Global Smartphone Dominance.

According to a recently published report by Strategy Analytics, Android’s dominance in the global market share over iOS systems is increasing substantially, even more than what was originally predicted.  This research shows that the total combined global purchases of smartphones escalated by over 41% in 2013 with Android clearly reaping the highest level of increased revenues.

Android commanded 79% of the total market share of worldwide smart phones shipments that totaled in excess of 990 million units in 2013.  The report goes on to state further that consumers purchased four times as many Android smartphones than those from both Microsoft and Apple combined.  It seems that 2013 was definitely the year of the Android.

Strategy Analytics also reported that purchases of the Apple smartphone only increased by a mere 13%, shipping slightly over 153 million phones or 15% of the total 2013 market share worldwide.  Microsoft’s Blackberry is now considered the definite third ranking member in the smartphone hierarchy, shipping only slightly over 35 million smartphones for 4% of the total 2013 market share worldwide.
